Seth Mitcho Obituary

Published by News & Messenger on Oct. 9, 2010.

Seth Joseph Mitcho Seth Joseph Mitcho died Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at his home after a long battle with anorexia. Seth is survived by his loving parents, Joseph and Jeanne Mitcho; sister, Sara Mitcho and her husband, Jeremy Balint; two nephews, Xavier and Quinn Balint and by his girlfriend, Elizabeth "Liza" Karlin.

Seth graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1994, attended the University of Virginia where he graduated with highest honors with a degree in Systems Engineering in 1998. After graduation, Seth traveled extensively through his work as a Financial Consultant at McKinsey & Company. He spent extended time in New York City, Milan, Barbados, and Philadelphia, to name a few. He moved back to Northern Virginia in 2004. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Arlington, Virginia and a frequent visitor and volunteer at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Triangle, Virginia.

Seth loved sports, karaoke, music, and games of competition. His rare combination of intelligence and charm made him a formidable opponent and an instant friend. His young life was full of accomplishments and achievements and his eight year long battle with an eating disorder gave him sensitivity and an understanding of people and their struggles that touched many who came to know him in recent years. He was a frequent volunteer at ECHO, Food and Friends, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, and the Haiti Committee at Our Lady Queen of Peace parish.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Seth's life during visitation hours on Sunday, October 10, 2010 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home and Crematory, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA 22193. I can't find the right words to express how incredibly sad I am to hear about Seth's passing. I met him when we were both in Adam and Julie Lake's wedding party, and although we only stayed in touch through email I always considered him a friend, and always appreciated what a positive, caring person he was. I truly regret not being able to be at his funeral, but I'm thinking of Seth today with love.

When I read the words above it really struck a cord with me....it is so true...his intelligence and charm made him an instant friend....and so much more. We have lost a great mind, great friend and great lover of all mankind. I will miss him greatly. As a friend at UVA and the remaining years, I will always carry him with me.

Jeanne, Joe, Sara and all the others,

I am truly saddened by Seth's death. What a tragic loss for you - and all the others who loved him, of whom there were many. Seth was a remarkable young man. I always loved seeing him, though those visits were not frequent enough in recent years. He was thoughtful, brilliant, kind and generous. Unfortunately, he was not able to beat that demon, anorexia. I hope you are comforted by the knowledge that you did everything you could to help him.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to attend the services for Seth this week. I'm in Umbria, Italy, not far from Assisi. In fact, on the day that Seth died, we were in the Basilica of San Francesco there. It wasn't until later in the evening that I learned from Lauren of his passing. Yesterday, I lit a candle for Seth in the chapel of the Franciscan convent, La Scarzuola, founded by St. Frances in 1218. The convent marks the site where St. Frances built a hut in the forest and "planted a bush of bay and roses and caused a spring to gush forth." A mass was said for Seth this morning in the church.

With deepest condolences-

Nicholas Mitcho
