SOWAAL - John "Jack" Francis was born in Brooklyn, NY, in August 1920. From 1937-46, he served in the U.S. Navy
, earning three bronze stars
. As Chief Pharmacist Mate, he worked with medical teams on many vessels, including the Flagship U.S.S. Biscayne. He was part of the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily and landings at Salerno. He also served with Scouts and Raiders (now Navy SEALs) and was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG). Jack received a BFA at UC-Santa Barbara, Licenza in sculpture at L'Accdemia delgi Arte (Florence), and then a MFA in sculpture from California College of Arts and Crafts in 1958. He also studied sculpture with the Ossip Zadkine (Paris). In the 1940s he married Luciana Cherici-Tramonti, with whom he had a son, Valentino, in 1949. During this time he served as curator at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and as Art Director for the City of Los Angeles. In 1956, he married NancyStromberg (CCAC 1958, Painting), and shortly after he served as Assistant to the President of the American Crafts Council in New York City. In the 1960s-70s, he taught sculpture at CCAC and Pratt University; he was also Research Professor in Interdisciplinary Studies at University of Wisconsin
-Madison. He and Nancy had a daughter, Alice, in 1969. From the 1970s-90s, Jack lived with Nancy and Alice in Wantagh, NY. During this time, he studied phenomenology, the philosophical foundation of his later sculptures. He was also an avid runner. In the 1990s he moved to Grover Beach, California. Jack passed of natural causes on January 10, 2013, while surrounded by Nancy and Alice. He is also survived by his son, Valentino, and his brother, Edward.
