If this is the Jack Friedman I think it is, my parents were good friends of Betty and Jack's. My parents were Rita and Bernard Hirsch. I must say that throughout my life I heard your family's names spoken of with love and remembered friendship.

I just came across a note from Jack and Betty. They were good friends of my parents, Rita Ginsberg Hirsch and Bernard Hirsch. I am sorry I never got to say how my parents valued their friendship though they may have lost close touch through the years. Sincere condolences to the family. I am sorry I was unaware of their passing earlier.

I had Jack Friedman as a biology student in 1965. He was an amazing wonderful person, warm, funny and just a great teacher. I became a teacher of chemistry and biology myself and tried to emulate his style. Years later he came to the school where I was teaching and we had a great talk.He was just what a teacher and leader should be. I also asked about the " less than great" teachers I had at Syosset H'S , he laughed and they were soon gone. Unfortunately, not b4 I suffered through their clssses! Rest in peace to a kind and professional man.

Mr. Friedman was my teacher at Syosset High School. He changed my life. Being raised in a family where higher education was not important, Mr. Friedman took a special interest in me and encouraged me to go to college and follow a career in physical therapy. Because of his encouragement, over the years I was able to work in a career for 50 years that I loved and where I was able to help so many people. He was my guest of honor at the class of '61 Syosset High reunion.

Dear Fran and Friedman Family,
I was saddened to read about Jack's passing. Yet, thinking about it brought back fond memories of Syosset High School and what he meant to it. He built and created an incredibly dynamic science program hiring some of the best teachers on Long Island.
I arrived as a novice Social Studies teacher in September 1965, and joined a faculty of stars. It was the Chairs of the departments, however, who really were the catalysts. Jack, along with Gus Franza and Jim Chenevy made the school such a great learning environment. Downstairs
Area E hummed with excitement as Joe Crane, Tom Moylett, Dad Kessler, etc. were encouraged by Jack to be creative and energetic.
I remember Jack's laugh, his warmth, his support. When I became Dean, he came to me to see if I could get a stolen monkey skull returned. The skull was from an exhibit on loan from C.W.Post. I found the culprits who returned the skull in a paper bag placed on my desk. Jack and I just sat and laughed.
His dedication to science never stopped. When Bill Wallis and I taught a course on education, Jack was a guest speaker on his fight against Creationism. Great discussion, great man. He will be missed.

Rest in Peace, Great Uncle Jack. You were awarded a Purple Heart for jumping on a grenade to save the life of your comrades in WW2. Even though you lost both of your legs, that never stopped you. You are a true hero. You will be missed.
