Marian McNamara Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2016.
McNAMARA- Marian T. "Zebby" of Hicksville NY passed away on January 21, 2016 after a brief illness. Marian was born in Hicksville on March 19, 1928, one of three daughters of Bernard and Mary Zeblisky. She leaves behind one sister, Frances Truss (Peter) of Glen Head and Irene Zeblisky predeceased her in 1994. Marian was married to Michael J. McNamara (deceased in 1986) for 30 years and together they raised five sons: Michael (Diane) of Stamford, CT; Christopher (Lori) of Massapequa Park, NY; the Reverend Msgr. Brian McNamara of West Islip, NY; Timothy (Evelyn) of Fishkill, NY and Stephen of Hicksville, NY. Marian attended St. Dominic High School and graduated from Mary Immaculate School of Nursing (MIH) in 1949 as a Registered Nurse. She continued to work at MIH part time as her family grew. Later, she would join the US Postal Service Medical Unit where she retired in 1991. Raising 5 sons still allowed her time to work on her family genealogy. She was an avid gardener, having a strong family background in Long Island farming. She never owned a car but could be seen for years riding a bicycle all over Hicksville. She always got to where she needed to be. Every special occasion and holiday meant she would be making her famous chocolates as gifts. She traveled extensively to Europe as well as to the western part of the US. She was privileged to have attended a Mass celebrated by St. Pope John Paul II in his private chapel. She was an active member of St. Ignatius of Loyola Church (Hicks-ville); a proud member of the Catholic Daughters of America for 60 years, and belonged to the following: St. Ignatius of Loyola Nocturnal Adoration Society, the Hicksville Civic Association, the African Violet Society, Mothers of Priests, and the Mary Immaculate Hospital Association. In addition to her sons, she leaves behind 5 grandchildren whom she was very proud of: Megan, Stephanie Follette (Steven), Thomas, Lauren and Allison. She was the beloved aunt of Susan, Lynn, Mark and Karen. Mom had numerous cousins as well. She will be truly missed by all who knew her. Reposing at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Bethpage Funeral Home, 20 Hicksville Road (1 mile north of Southern State Pkwy, exit 29) Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial Wednesday 10:30 AM at St. Ignatius R.C. Church, Hicksville, LI. Interment to follow at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations are greatly appreciated to the: St. Ignatius of Loyola Memorial Fund (129 Broadway; Hicksville, NY 11801) and the Sisters of St. Dominic Office of Advancement (555 Albany Ave, Amityville, NY 11701). My sincere condolences Tim. Your mom sounds like she had an active life and a rewarding career in the nursing field yet still found time to keep all those boys in check. Now I see where you got your passion for cycling.

Mike, Chris, Fr.Brian, Tim and Steve,
I'm so sorry for your loss. Your mom was my mom's best friend and she was a wonderful person. They looked forward to their Mary Immaculate Nursing School reunions with such pride. They are having their own Mary Immaculate reunion now in heaven. What a reunion that must be! They raised their children together, shared what they had with each other and loved each other. They didn't have or need a lot of material things because they were such spiritual people that knew what mattered in life. No wonder they were both nurses.
My heart goes out to you.
Love,
Regina
