LOGAN - Rev. Richard Mitchell, 84, of Brentwood, NY, passed away Monday, October 22, 2012 in Whitehall, PA, as a result of natural causes. Affectionately known as "Rev", Richard was born on January 19, 1928 in Java, Virginia, to the late Willie and Bertha Logan. Richard attended grade school in Virginia until moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the early 1940s. He continued his education in Philadelphia until joining the Navy in 1942. He served in the Pacific theater from October 1943 until his honorable discharge inDecember 1945. Richard metVernell Nutt in Philadelphia in 1955 and subsequently moved to Bay Shore. Richard began fellowship with First Baptist Church in Bay Shore where he was called into the ministry. During this time, Richard began a career at the Town of Islip where he would work until his retirement in 1986. On June 9, 1968, Rev. Logan and six other families from the Brentwoodommunity formed New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Rev. Logan was dedicated to the progress of New Jerusalem Baptist Church and its congregation as evidenced by its expansion, ministries, and family-like culture. Rev. Logan, a 33 Mason, was the last surviving Founding Father of St. Marks Lodge No. 19 of Brentwood, New York, which was established in 1972. Rev. Logan shepherded the New Jerusalem Baptist Church congregation faithfully until June 2010 when his health began to fail him. Rev. Logan was relocated to the Whitehall Manor Assisted Living Facility in Whitehall, Pennsylvania where he remained until God called him home. Along with the growth of his ministry and pastorship, Rev. Logan was blessed over the years with a loving and supportive family. He leaves to mourn: his wife, Vernell Logan; two sisters, Betty ("Tiny") Alice Logan and Earline ("Penny") Deloris Saunders; three sons and daughter-in-laws: James B. Saunders, Sr. & Lois Branch, Richard Loan Jr. & Cheryl, Raynard Logan Sr. & Marian. Seven grandchildren; James B. Saunders, Jr., Natasha Rogers, Alycia Logan, Ty Massolena, Raynard Logan, Jr., Sharae Ry'elle Logan, and Raiven Shi'Anne Logan. Three goddaughters: Sheryl (Rooks) Hudson, Vernell Davis and Cindy (McDuffie) Robeson; great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be missed, but we know as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ that we shall see him again. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rose's Funeral Home, Inc. Viewing will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 29th at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 39 MacArthur Avenue, Brentwood, NY 11717. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the going home services at 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 30th at New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY.
