Irwin PLOTKIN Obituary

PLOTKIN - Irwin, of East Hills, New York, passed away peacefully in his 82nd year on September 2, 2013, at Franklin Hospital after a long and courageous battle with a chronic illness. Irwin will be remembered by his community of East Hills for playing a central role in planning, implementing and leading a new seniors committee in East Hills. In 2012, he was honored with the Village's "Outstanding Community Leader Award" for his vision which led to the committee's widespread success, and for serving as the committee's chair for 5 years.Irwin was born on November 6, 1931, in the Bronx where he attended the Bronx High School of Science. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont and his graduate degree from New York University. He is survived by Mai Plotkin (nee Nielsen), his beloved wife of almost 56 years, and his loving family, including his daughter Ann (Graham), his son Eric (Nadia), his grandchldren Kayla and Max, his step-grandchildren Meg and Sam, and his canine pal Marty. Irwin isremembered as an energetic, fearless and creative free-thinker. Irwin loved to explore ideas and issues from outside the box, in both his professional and personal lives. His career in hospital administration took him to various hospitals in New York and abroad. He loved to travel, to drive a tractor, to sail, to roam the woods of Connecticut, to craft projects in his workshop, to socialize with fellow dog owners in the dog park, and to find treasures in eclectic tag sales... but most of all, he loved to be with his family. More recently, Irwin became very active in the East Hills community where he lived for thirty years. He will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends (near and far), who will remember fondly his love of life and his spirited engagement with people.

Sending you a hug and sharing with you a quote that seemed especially comforting to us when my mother passed away. It was written by the poet, Tagore - "Death is not extinguishing the light;
It is putting out the lamp because the dawn has come.
