Alger, John Robert*  
John Robert Alger passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 17th, 2015. Born Sept. 19, 1965 in Ann Arbor, Mich., to David W. Alger and Mary H. (Gilmore) Alger, John was a man dedicated to serving others. He served his country for 20 years in the Navy, retiring in 2006 as an NDC Chief Navy Diver last stationed at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City, Fla. After leaving the military, John joined the police force first with the Panama City Police and later as a Deputy Sheriff with the Bay County Sheriff Department. He served as a member of the SWAT team for several years and became a member of the Surf Rescue Team in 2013. Last year he was named Deputy of the Year for his exemplary work. He was well known for going above and beyond to keep his community safe. But John's service was not limited to his time in uniform. Along with Monica Pennington, his loving partner in life, he volunteered his time to managing and caring for the community cat population in Panama City. John touched many lives in his years of service and he will be dearly missed. John is survived by his parents, his partner Monica, his sisters, Karen J. Williams and Sharon A. Alger Hughes and their husbands Keith A. Williams and Peter Hughes; his brothers, David M. Alger (Tamara), Thomas W. Alger, and James S. Alger (Sara); his nephew Garrick B. Williams, his niece Kristen C. Williams, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. A service celebrating John's life will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Panama City. Cockcroft, Bertha Marie*  
Bertha Marie Cockcroft, 93, of Panama City, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015. She was born Feb. 21, 1922 in Panama City to Jacob and Ida Annie Godert. She graduated from Bay High School in 1941 and received her nurse's training at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. She served in the United States Army Nurses Corp during World War II. She was a retired register nurse having worked at Adams Hospital and International Paper Company. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benjamin Cockcroft; son, William "Bill" Jacob Cockcroft; two granddaughters, Justine Elizabeth Kelly, Katelyn Rae McGill; sister, Minnie Godert and a brother, Jacob Emil Godert. She is survived by three daughters, Marie Nelson (Ronnie); Linda Kelly, Avis McGill (Kenny); sister, Agnes Godert; six grandchildren, Kenya Williams, Jeremy Nelson, Jacob Nelson, Rochelle Bowman (Jonathan), Ashley Kelly, Ricky McNaron (Tonilea); eight great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacob, Marleigh, Peyton, Janelle, Kelli, Maylea and Jase. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Josh Spiers officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
