Mrs. Jeanne "Jan" Ross Jinks, 83, of Panama City, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013, peacefully at home.
Mrs. Jinks was born April 24, 1929 in Jacksonville, Florida to Mr. Joseph H. Ross and Mrs. Gertrude B. Ross. Mrs. Jinks graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville in 1947. During her high school years, she was a member of Lambda Sigma Sigma Sorority, Sergeant-At-Arms of the Senior Class, and a varsity cheerleader. She was named one of the outstanding graduates of her class. She entered Duke University in 1947 and during the 3 years she studied there was also a cheerleader, a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and became a member of Delta Phi Rho Alpha, an honorary athletic association. In 1949, she made her debut with the Debutante Club of Jacksonville and was a member of the Spinsters Cotillion Club in 1950. In 1950, she transferred to the University of Florida
in Gainesville, graduating in 1952 with a major in Sociology and double minors in Education and Psychology.
It was at the University of Florida that she met her future husband, Bert Jinks. They were married in 1953 in Jacksonville, FL. Bert Jinks served in the Coast Guard after graduation and they began their married life in New Orleans, LA. A subsequent posting moved them to Miami, FL where their first son, John, was born in 1954. After his service ended they moved to Bert's hometown of Panama City and welcomed their second son, Robert, in 1956.
Jan was a loving wife and devoted mother introducing her sons to golf, and teaching them the finer points of tennis. She was very active in the community, serving in the Junior Service League, the St. Andrew Bay Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Bay Hospital Auxiliary, and the Woman's Club of Panama City, where she served in the Education Department. An avid and lifelong tennis player, she played league tennis at Bay Point for many years. She was a member of St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club and a parishioner of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Panama City.
She was predeceased by her twin brother, Dr. John Ross.
Mrs. Jinks is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, John Bert Jinks; sons, John Bert Jinks Jr. (Dr. Eleanor McCain) and Robert Ross Jinks (Susan); granddaughters, Elizabeth Jinks Stewart (Brandon Stewart) and Anna Ross Jinks; brother, Robert Ross (Maureen); sister-in-law, Nancy Ross; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at St Dominic Catholic Church, 3308 E. 15th Street. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
