John Harrison "Jack" Hamm, 82, of Panama City passed away on Monday, November 26, 2012.
He was born in Hartford, CT on April 4, 1930 to Harrison A. Hamm and Frances McLaughlin Hamm. He grew up on a historic dairy farm in Simsbury, CT, graduated from Simsbury High School in 1948 and the University of Connecticut in 1952. While at the University of Connecticut he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and also joined the Navy Reserve. After receiving a B.S., he was accepted in Officer Candidate School. After OCS he went to NAS Pensacola for flight training.
While in Pensacola, he met Jane Hodges of Mobile, AL. They met in the fall and were married in the spring. After receiving his wings as a Naval Aviator, he was stationed at Quonset Pt., Rhode Island and attached to Squadron VS-24, a carrier based anti-submarine squadron. After his Navy duty, he attended the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, received an MBA in 1958. He continued as a week-end warrior in various Navy reserve squadrons for several more years. Jack and Jane and their growing family were "corporate gypsies" and continued moving as Jack worked for Central Soya Co, General Foods, Ruan Transport.
The corporate moves took them to Chattanooga, Grand Island, NY, Fort Wayne, Dallas, and Des Moines. John Hamm, Jr was born at NAS Quonset Pt., RI; Evelyn Hamm was born Boston, Laura Hamm, in Chattanooga, and Christopher Hamm in Dallas. In 1969 they moved to Panama City where Jack had purchased a business, Gulf Mfg. Corp. and remained in that business until 1977. After closing that business, Jack and Jane became real estate brokers and opened Harbour Realty on the Panama City Marina. He retired soon after the business offices on the Marina were removed.
He enjoyed sailing and boating on the bay. Jack was active in the following civic and business groups, was a Bay County Commissioner, District 2, in 1990; Bay County Board of Realtors President in 1988; President of the Downtown Rotary Club
in 1988 where he was a Paul Harris Fellow; was Past Chairman of the Bay County Republican Party Executive Committee for 6 years; was Past Director and/or Committee Chairman St Andrew Yacht Club; the United Way; the American Heart Assn.; the American Cancer Society; and the Main Street Project. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Committee of 100 for 21 years; Military Affairs Committee for 21 years; the United Way Board of Directors; the Metropolitan Planning Organization; and the Northwest Regional Library System Board of Directors.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Paula Russo.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Hodges Hamm; 4 children, John Harrison Hamm Jr., (Janet), Evelyn Adams Fore, Laura Frances Hamm, Christopher M. Hamm (Kelly); 9 grandchildren, Rebecca Hamm, Kathleen Bowen (Chad), Elizabeth Hamm, John Harrison Hamm III, Laura Fore, Julia Fore, Kelsey Hamm, Sarah Hamm and Shane Hamm.
