Mary Ruthven Martin

Mary Ruthven Martin went to be with her Mom, Dad and Jesus on February 4, 2014. She was surrounded by her loving daughter, Christal F. Martin, and other family and friends.

Mary is a life-long resident of Panama City, FL. She was born on November 30, 1952 (as a twin to John Jesse Ruthven) to their loving parents Beeman and Chrystal Ruthven. She graduated from Bay High School in 1971. After high school, Mary followed the tradition of her father, Beeman and went to the ""Best School in the South,"" Auburn University. Mary then pursued her passion for teaching and graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Auburn has always been a part of Mary's life as ""War Eagle, Hey"" was heard often from her.

After graduating from Auburn, Mary returned to Panama City and began her legacy as one of the best Bay County School Teachers. She has taught for 19 years, but Patronis Elementary was where she called home and she taught with her 'family' for 18 years. Teaching children was her natural talent. That passion fueled her determination to continue to teach her 2nd grade class this year while undergoing aggressive cancer treatments.

Mary loved boating and going to Shell Island with all of her family, especially Christal her wonderful daughter. Let's not forget Auburn football tailgating that she loved to enjoy the RV life with her ""Precious"" brother John and his wife Kay and other family. Mary and Christal were best friends and they loved shopping, laughing, watching Auburn football, and just having fun together. Mary turned on a light every where she went. She knew no stranger. If the world were full of more Mary's it would be a better place.

She is survived by her daughter, Christal Faye Martin, four brothers Michael B. Ruthven (Nancy), Jimmy E. Ruthven (Brenda), John J. Ruthven (Kay), and Larry L. Ruthven. She has nine nieces and nephews plus thirteen great nieces and nephews. Mary was also lucky to have many loving cousins, aunts and uncles. Mary's oldest brother Michael Ruthven and wife Nancy lovingly opened their home to Mary in these last few weeks, Christal is forever grateful. Mary is blessed with many, many wonderful friends. Christal would like to give a special thanks to some very close friends for their AUsome support (Mrs. Collette Barnes, Mrs. Brenda McGonagil, and Mrs. Alice Kaus). Christal would also like to send a special thank you to Dr. Andrew Weber and Dr. George Reiss and their staff for all that they have done for her mother.

Christal would like to ask anyone wanting to remember her mother to please make a contribution in Mary's name to the Cancer Foundation.

Mary's Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday February 8th at 4 p.m. at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home on 23rd Street in Panama City, FL. Please join us and bring your favorite memory of Mary to share with her family. War Eagle, Hey!
The family will receive family and friends after Mary's Celebration of Life at her brother Jimmy E. Ruthven's home 209 South Cove Lane, Panama City, FL 32401.
