Fred Moates Obituary

Fred Houlton Moates II was laid to rest in the family plot at Greenwood Cemetery, Saturday Aug. 21, 2010.

He was born in St. Andrews, Fla., Dec. 22, 1932. Growing up on St. Andrews Bay, he spent many hours crabbing and seine fishing with his dad, grandfather, uncle and brother.

In his early teen years he was a member of historic Troop 38 of the Boy Scouts where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, under Scout Master Richard Post. He also was an active member of The Order of DeMolay. Fred was a 1949 graduate of Bay High, where he played on the football team. He continued his education at Florida State University. There he played football and was a member of the winning team at the 1949 Cigar Bowl. Shortly there after he honored his county by joining the U. S. Air Force and did a tour in Korea. After returning home, he resumed his studies at the University of Florida earning his degree in Engineering. His career included working for the State Road Department of Florida, International Paper Company, Rust Engineering, Brown and Root Engineering and Halliburton. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Ray and Henrietta Louise Moates.

He is survived by his wife Jeanette Stillman Moates, Eatonton, Ga.; brother, Samuel Ray Moates and wife, Patsy, Panama City, Fla.; son, Fred Houlton Moates III and wife, Lori, Opelika, Ala.; daughters, Margaret Ann Cotney, Leisha Allen, Birmingham, Ala.; and Pamela Camp, Panama City, Fla.; stepchildren, Kimberly Stagg Martin and husband, Jeff, Denver, Colo.; and Michelle Stagg Berreth and husband, Nowell, Atlanta, Ga.

Fred was also the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren.
