+I'm saddened by the news of John's passing. We graduated together at Central Hi in 1945. I remember his nickname "Long Shot Johnny" because he was such a star in Basketball. My daughters went to South when he coached there and I met him there. My prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Betty White Long (Port St. Lucie, FL)

Our prayers are with the family of Mr. Colmery at this time. I had heard of John Colmery and his basketball playing skills from my mother who went to Central H.S. with him. Not only could he play basketball well, he could coach well too!!! Attending all of the SHS basketball games in 1964 & crying when we lost by 1 point we only had to wait for a year to achieve the state championship in 1965; it was wonderful!! Success comes to those who wait. Life lessons were also taught in POD class making the class more interesting than just regurgitating material in the book. Mr. Colmery knew how to apply the "principles" of democracy. He will be missed. SHS class of '64

My sincere condolences to Coach Colmery's wife and his wonderful daughters. He truly was a good person. His legacy as a great coach at South High School, Columbus leading the basketball team to the 1965 State Championship was a highlight in my senior year at South. I still cherish my scrapbook of the team which includes a newspaper story of when his players visited him at home. We have many people who come into our lives. Some we forget and others we remember forever. Coach John Colmery is one person I will never forget. Class of 1965

It was with great sadness, I learned of John's passing. He was truly a man's man in a female dominated household -- how lucky was he! John will be missed but his memory will live on through his family, friends and former students -- how lucky was he!

Mr. Colmery was my home room teacher from '55-'58. I remember that his home room students were important to him. He and his wife had our homeroom for a Christmas Party....he was available for advice and called me at home about my future plans. I became a teacher and often thought of him as an example through the years.

May God bless you all, everyone.
Mrs. Colmery and daughters, you probably don't remember me. I was the team manager for Coach at South High '61-'64. That was the beginning of my becoming a man. Mr. Colmery, a great man, gave his "all" to his job. He helped us to be winners not only on the court, but, in life. I have carried Coach in my heart all my life.
