Emily Grossman, 56, passed away peacefully, with her family at her side, at her home in Lakeland, FL on Nov. 25, 2012 from brain cancer.
Emily was born on Oct. 27, 1956 in Prentiss, Mississippi. Emily was raised in Lynn Haven, Florida, and went on to graduate from the University of Florida. After moving to Lakeland in 1977, she taught fourth grade at Kathleen Elementary School until 1989. Emily was a loving mother who was passionate about education and being outdoors. She enjoyed researching and planning educational trips with her family. Emily was a certified Master Gardener who actively volunteered with the Polk County/University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service. She particularly enjoyed gardening to attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Emily is survived by her loving husband J. Edward Grossman, son Benjamin J. Grossman of Tallahassee, and daughter Andrea L. Grossman of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by her father Robert Flemming Thompson of Lynn Haven, sister Barbara Thompson Roy of Watertown, TN, and brother Robert Flemming Thompson, Jr. of Tallahassee. She is also survived by three nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lora Della Thompson.
A memorial service for Emily will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Emily to the non-profit Reading Is Fundamental at www.rif.org.
