Dr. Sandra Johnson (Phillips) Potter, 73, of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Springfield, Va., a longtime high school English teacher, died Thursday, Jan. 17 at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia.

She leaves her husband of 52 years, Lt. Col. John Robert Potter, USAF (Ret) of Panama City Beach, Fla.; her daughter, Virginia Vermelle (Potter) Carroll and her husband, Patrick J. Carroll, of Springfield, Va.; two sons, John Robert Potter and his wife, Shari Potter, and Michael Potter and his wife, Robin Potter, both of Indianapolis, Ind.; her sister, Marcia Ann (Phillips) Taylor and her husband, Robert Taylor, of Langston, Ala.; and nine grandchildren, Michael Potter, Matthew Potter, Katherine Potter, Emily Potter, Alex Potter, James Potter, Sandra June Carroll, Lynette Vermelle Carroll and Aileen Genelle Carroll.

Sandra was born in Hattiesburg, Miss., the eldest daughter of James Carlos Phillips and Hazel Vermelle (Johnson) Phillips. She graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1956 and from Mississippi Southern in 1960. She then went on to earn a mster's of arts from Hardin-Simmons University in Texas, and a doctor of philosophy in education from the University of North Dakota.

Dr. Potter taught English and special education for over 34 years in more than nine school systems, while also earning the rank of Life Master for her and her husband's love of tournament bridge. She and her husband, John, were likewise avid travelers, visiting 49 of the 50 states in the United States of America, as well as multiple locations in Mexico, Canada, Morocco and numerous countries in Europe and the Caribbean region.

Dr. Potter will be cremated, and a memorial ceremony will be held in Panama City Beach, Fla., during the summer of 2013.
