Betty Lou Ausland, 80, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2011.
The Guest Book is expired.
She was born Oct. 30, 1930, in Chipley, Fla., to the late General and Leola Tharp.
Mrs. Ausland started working at the age of 12 and worked most of the rest of her life. She moved to Panama City after graduating from Chipley High School, and was a bookkeeper for the Panama City News Herald, Van Kleeck Co, Bay Ace Hardware and other Bay County businesses. After retiring from bookkeeping, she started a retail career in her 70s as a sales associate at Hallmark, and, other than being with family, was happiest when working and doing for others. She taught us all how to live in the moment, take joy in the small things in life, and look for the best in the people you love.
Predeceased by husband Fred Ausland, they always treated each other with love, kindness and respect, and were so blessed to share such a peaceful, happy 51 years together. Their wonderful journey began in 1951 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, where they were both longtime members.
She is survived by beloved daughter and son-in-law, Rick and Amy Wilkes; the lights of her life, granddaughters Kelly Andrews and husband, Matt, of Atlanta, and Kim Wilkes of Pensacola, Fla.; and her heart, her sister Myrtle Cook and husband, Rufus, of Panama City, Fla. She also is survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends who loved her as their second mom and best friend.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Southerland Family Funeral Home in Panama City, with interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Community Health and Rehab for the tremendous care and love shown to Betty and the support and comfort given to them by all the staff. Thanks also to Covenant Hospice and Dr. Vicki Harrell.
If lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew United Methodist Church or Covenant Hospice in Betty's honor.
