Elmer Whitford (Bud) Ware passed away Monday at Campbellton Graceville Hospital.
He was 88. Born and raised in St. Andrews, Dr. Ware graduated from Bay High School, Stetson University and received his doctorate in theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. In 1958, Dr. Ware and his family moved to Graceville where he was a professor of theology at Baptist Bible Institute, now known as Florida Baptist College. He finished his working career as the director of the Northwest Florida Regional Housing Authority, also in Graceville. Bud specifically requested a short obituary, which is fortunate because his talents and achievements were many. In addition to being a minister, scholar and businessman, he was a licensed master plumber, an accomplished engineer and designer, wood turner, artist and boat builder, having kept his son afloat in boats for many years. He has been a genuine friend and comfort to many during his years here in Graceville.
Dr. Ware was preceded in death by his wife, Judy, mother of his children Judith Ettlinger and Phillip; and also preceded in death by older brother, John of Tampa; and sister, Lois Matthews of Athens, Ga.
He is survived by his loving wife, Erma; his children and Judith's son, John Ettlinger; a brother, Charles (Bubba) and wife, Adelaide, of Panama City; and one sister, Mary Joe (Pie) Hubbard of Rockford, Ill. He is also survived by one stepdaughter, Sonia Roberts (husband, Clark); four stepsons, Jerry Brookins (wife, Diana), Reggie Brookins (wife, Robin), Joe Sheffield (wife, Suzanne) and Roger Sheffield; along with 13 step-grandchildren and 26 step-great-grandchildren.
The viewing will be held at Williams Funeral Home, 5283 Brown St., Graceville, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the First Baptist Church of Graceville, of which he was a longtime member. The family would like to thank the staff of Campbellton Graceville Hospital and Covenant Hospice for their kind and affectionate attention during his hospital stay.
