Dr. George I. Daugherty, II (Colonel USAF, Retired) was born November 14, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY, and passed away November 30, 2012, at his home with his four children at his bedside. Following graduation in 1950 from Yorktown High School, Yorktown, NY, Dr. Daugherty attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, where he was accepted into the School of Dentistry in 1952, and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1956.

The year 1956 also marked Col. Daugherty's entry into the Air Force Dental Corps with an assignment to Nouaaseur AFB, Morocco, where he met his wife, Leenoma (Shorty). They were married at old St. Dominic's in 1958. After serving at McGuire AFB, he separated from the service in 1959, spending one year in private practice in Peekskill, NY. Upon resumption of his Air Force career, Col. Daugherty had assignments in Washington State, New Mexico, and Puerto Rico. In 1969 he began an Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) sponsored program in General Dentistry at the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, and Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio. Two years later, he graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Science and General Dentistry. Following duty at Lowry AFB, CO and Tyndall AFB, FL, Col. Daugherty was transferred to Eglin AFB, FL where he served as a clinical instructor in restorative dentistry for general practice residents, and as Officer in Charge of the Hurlburt Dental Clinic. While at Eglin, he developed the Advanced Clinical Dentistry Residency Program for mid-career officers, and served as it's first program director. Col. Daugherty left Eglin in 1982, and has since served as Base Dental Surgeon at Ramstein AFB, Germany and Base Dental Surgeon at Tyndall AFB. Col Daugherty assumed the rank of Colonel in June 1975. He retired from the Air Force in April 1987, and joined the faculty at Gulf Coast Community College, Panama City, FL.

During his 30-year military career, Col. Daugherty belonged to numerous professional organizations including the American Dental Association, Academy of Operative Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, and the International Association of Dental Research. He has held several important positions in the Academy of General Dentistry representing all the dentists in the Federal Services as their National Director on the Board of Directors form 1976-79, and as Chairman of the National Committee on Certification of General Dentistry from 1979-84. He also served as delegate to its national meetings from 1976-82, and earned its coveted Fellowship and Mastership awards in 1972 and 1978, respectively. In addition, he received the prestigious honor of ""Fellow"" in the American College of Dentists in 1975. He is a published author, and has presented lectures and table clinics too numerous to mention.

Among Col. Daugherty's military awards are the Legion of Merit, Three Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Force Commendation medals, and two Outstanding Unit Citations. After retirement from the Air Force in 1987, Dr. Daugherty became the Administrative Coordinator, Dental Programs, at Gulf Coast Community College. To accompany the Traditional Dental Assisting Program, he was responsible for establishing a Non-Traditional Dental Assisting Program, a Dental Hygiene Program, and a dental clinic to treat financially disadvantaged individuals from the community.

Dr. Daugherty was presently a member of Sons of the American Revolution, a ""life"" member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity. He was an active member of the Bay County Dental Society, Northwest District Dental Society, and the Florida Dental Society. In addition, he is active in community activities, a member of the Panama Country Club, and a parishioner at St. Dominic Catholic Church, and a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Dr. Daugherty was predeceased by his wife, the former Leenoma (Shorty) Reese of Millville, FL. They have four children, Derek, Mary Lee, Donna Jean, and Stephanie Colette. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Daniel and Brenden Daugherty and Taylor and Logan Branch, his brother and wife, Donald and Susan Daugherty of Madison, WI; and his caregivers, Valerie Nissley, Nobie Smith, and Ashley of Covenant Hospice.

A funeral mass will begin at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Fr. Peter Zalewski officiating and military honors offered by the US Air Force Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Tuesday, December 4, 2012, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, with Rosary service at 7:00. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Daugherty's name may be made to the for lung cancer research.
