LaVerne Shores Gill passed away at Covenant Hospice at Bay Medical Center on August 1, 2013 after a losing battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Ida Nelson Shores and Joseph R. Shores, both deceased.

LaVerne was born in Jackson County and attended Jackson County Schools. She continued her education in Norfolk, Va., while her husband was stationed there and became a cosmetologist.

She enjoyed more than 60 years with her husband, Robert A. Gill. She enjoyed her travels with her husband while he was in service. She also enjoyed her sewing, crocheting and other arts and crafts. Most of all, she enjoyed family. They were not gifted with children, but were blessed with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Edward and Pryce Shores; and sisters Kathleen Robinson and Bernice Harper.

Survivors include her husband Robert; sister, Juanita Melvin; brothers Quinton Shores, Carson Shores and wife Francis.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Kent Forest Lawn Chapel, with Rev. Michael Bryan officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, at Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Covenant Hospice.
