Mother Little Levy Askew was born April 16, 1947, in Marianna, Fla., to Jimmie Lee and Catherine Mack Jennings. She passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2008.

She attended school in the Bay District School System. She resided in Panama City, Fla., prior to and upon returning from Norfolk, Va., after the death of her husband, Melvin Askew. She became a dedicated, dependable member of New Covenant Worship Center Church of God in Christ in November 2002, where her son, Dr. John L. Haley Jr., serves as pastor.

Mother Askew served her church as a choir member and a deaconess. She served her community on the Glenwood Community Board, where she fought endlessly until drug "nests" were eradicated from her Lincoln Park neighborhood. She was honored by the Panama City Police Department for her unwavering efforts to make her neighborhood a safe haven for all.

Mother Askew leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Dewey Davis (Greta) of Panama City, Fla., and Dr. John L. Haley Jr. (Julia) of Panama City, Fla.; grandchildren, Dewey Jr., Lashawnda, Jiwuan, Jessica and Alex; three great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Della Johnson of Springfield, Fla., Costella (Ezekial) Jones of Xenia, Ohio, Luvenia (Jim) McNair and Helen (Howard) Steele of Lynn Haven, Fla., Delorise E. Page of Tallahassee, Fla., Linda (Ulysses) Williams and Kay (Bernard) Smith of Grayson, Ga.; and aunts, Irene (Paul) Gilbert of Xenia, Ohio, Claudia (Walter) Harmon of Anchorage, Alaska, Eula Mae Mack, Susie Reed, Mary Lee and Helen Mack. She also is cherished by devoted friends, Mr. Wilmer Hagens, Lisa Jemison, Nettie Walker, Arelander Hooper; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmie Lee and Catherine Jennings; and a brother, Jimmie Jr.

A homegoing celebration will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at Macedonia Baptist Church, 715 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Panama City, Fla., with Dr. Darryl Stanley as pastor and Bishop David Charles Mack officiating. The family will receive friends at 603 Williams Ave. and from 1-8 p.m. today, Oct. 28, 2008, at the funeral home.
