Mr. Tony Barnes Jr. departed this life Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at his home with loving friends and family surrounding him.

Mr. Barnes was born in Florala, Ala., to the late Mr. Tony Barnes Sr. and Mrs. Katie Carr Barnes. He had been a resident of Panama City, Fla., since 1941. He was owner and operator of Barnes Dry Cleaners for more than 50 years. He afforded employment opportunities to many Panama City residents. His business expertise extended to Tyndall Air Force Base and Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He was involved in many civic and community activities and politics. This included running for city commissioner. He was a major contributor and assisted his cousin, Pastor Lillie Carr Hutchison, in acquiring a building which now is the Carr Memorial Prayer Chapel. This is a family-owned and operated outreach ministry that extends help throughout this city and state.
Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, two children and his wife of more than 50 years, Mrs. Mary Oates Barnes. He is survived by two brothers, Charles (Helen) Barnes of Rafford, N.C., and Joe Elmore Barnes of Tacoma, Wash.; daughter, Christine Blake; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Bertha Williams, Mrs. Melvina Young and Mrs. Helen Barnes; three brothers-in-law, Mr. William (Bonnie) Oates, Douglas (Janice) Oates and Edward (Clara) Oates; son-in-law, Mr. Clement Brooks; three adopted sons, Robert Pittman, Archie Shackleford and Matthew Harmon; lovingly devoted caregivers, Ms. Jean Johnson, cousin Elder Carlos Hutchison and granddaughter Ms. Dana Mitchell; close friends and neighbors for more than 40 years, Mr. Henry and Pattie Faison; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loyal longtime employees and sorrowing friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Barnes will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Delwynn Williams, pastor, and Elder C.A. Hutchison officiating. Public visitation will begin from 1-8 p.m. today, Feb. 6, 2009, at the funeral home. The body will lie in state one hour prior to funeral services at the church on Saturday. Interment will follow at Florala Memorial Cemetery in Florala, Ala.
