Helga Phillips, 71, of Panama City, Florida passed away at Select Specialty Medical Hospital, Panama City on Memorial Day, May 26, 2014.

She survived her first round with cancer last year, only to have it aggressively return again this year.

Helga was born in Goeppingen, Germany on June 26, 1942. Her early childhood was spent in Germany, and she moved to the United States with her parents as a teenager.

Helga was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Tom, who passed away four months ago. Helga is survived by her parents, John and Lottie Malone. Her daughter Terri Grendi, and her husband John; and one granddaughter Brooke. She is also survived by one Aunt (Mary), two Uncles (Bernie and Danny), and several cousins.

After graduating from High School, Helga met and married her beloved, Tom. Tom's 26 year Air Force career took them to all corners of the globe. Helga was especially proud of her German heritage and was thrilled when they returned to Germany for a couple of years in the late 1970's. Helga loved to learn about new cultures, and she immersed herself in the Japanese culture when they were stationed at Yakota AFB, Japan in the mid 1980's. While they lived there, she taught English to Japanese students. In addition to supporting her husband, Helga worked outside the home in accounting related roles over the years.
The other love of Helga's life was her granddaughter Brooke. She loved spending time with her, and cherished the time the two of them had together.

Two of Helga's many passions were cooking and knitting. Her famous Rouladen recipe was a favorite amongst Tom's colleagues, her family and friends. Her love of knitting culminated in her opening and managing her own knitting shop in Panama City, Fl. for several years. Recently, her granddaughter has been the beneficiary of her skill, which includes many beautiful sweaters.

She was a loyal and dedicated mother, daughter and friend. She was a very caring and giving person who put the needs of others before her own. Even in her final days, she worried more about the ones she loved, than she did about herself.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Friday, May 30, 2014 at Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home. A reception will follow.
