Robert "Bob" Shumaker, Sr., 92, of Panama City, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at a local hospital. A native of Vicksburg, Miss., he had resided in Bay County for the past 50 years. Bob served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a fixed wing aviator. He trained countless pilots for instrument rating and flew a wide variety of aircraft. After WWII he trained on helicopters and served during the Korean War as a rescue helicopter pilot. As a helicopter pilot, he helped build Dew Line and earned the Sikorsky Aircraft Rescue Award. Bob was a Shriner and Mason and attained "Worshipful Master" Acme Lodge #222. He was Baptist by faith and attended Hiland Park Baptist Church in Panama City.
Bob is survived by his children, Terry and Lonnie Shumaker, Butch and Susan Shumaker and Debbie and JD Smith; siblings, Catherine Brinson and George and Peggy Shumaker, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and visitors at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral service from 10-11 a.m. The Acme Lodge #222 will also open one hour prior to the funeral service.
