Hugh Pyle Obituary

Hugh F. Pyle was born Dec. 30, 1918, in Portsmouth, Va., and passed away Monday, May 3, 2010, at his home with his family by his side.

Dr. Pyle preached in small country churches in Central Florida before pastoring First Baptist Church in Groveland, Fla., Brent Baptist Church in Pensacola, Fla., Cove Baptist Church in Panama City and Central Baptist Church, also in Panama City. In 1960, he founded Panama City Christian School.

In 1973, he began a ministry of full-time evangelism, traveling to 46 states, faithfully preaching God's word and encouraging churches and pastors for nearly 25 years.

He also served as a staff evangelist for the Sword of the Lord publication. He was the author of 47 books and booklets.

Hugh was a fun-loving, caring father to his three children, Barbara and Grayson Dawkins, Lucilla and Bobby Hodges and David and Donna Pyle. He was a hero to his grandchildren, Sharon and Nigel Wagg, Pamela and Jim Ker, Jennifer and Evan Kozlow, Amy and Forest Hamilton, David Scott Pyle, Christy and Adam Parent, Kimberly and Patrick Brookens. His 16 great-grandchildren were a great joy to him, Nicole, Lindsey and Joshua Wagg, Robby and Brian Ker, Lilly and Caroline Kozlow, Grace Hamilton, Noah and Ari Pyle, Olivia, Elias, Addison and Ava Joy Parent, Yvonne and Mareah Brookens. He also is survived by his brothers, Norman and Jackie Pyle, Homer and Alouise Pyle, Howard and Charlotte Pyle; and many special nieces and nephews.

The love of his life, Esther, has been in heaven for two weeks, eagerly anticipating his arrival. Also waiting for him were his parents; older brother, Robert; baby sister, Mary Louise; grandson, David Dawkins; and a host of friends.

Dr. Pyle's memorial celebration will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2010, at Central Baptist Church, where he was pastor emeritus, with David Hugh Pyle officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, May 6, 2010, at Southerland Family Funeral Home, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church, before the service. Pallbearers are Grayson Dawkins, Bobby Hodges, David Scott Pyle, Jim Ker, Robby Ker, Forest Hamilton, Patrick Brookens and Stephen Pyle. Honorary pallbearers will be former staff members and fellow preachers.

Memorials can be made to Gideons International or Covenant Hospice. Condolences may be submitted or viewed at www.southerlandfamily.com.

Dr Pyle was a tremendous inspiration to my family beginning in the 1940's through present. We are saddened but happy. We know where he is. My Dad and Mom were his musicians at Brent Baptist Church in Pensacola, Fl many years ago. Our whole family grew up under his strong ministry. Both of them will be missed. Jerry and Gayle Mattheiss

I loved both of your parents dearly and thank our Lord that He placed us under their loving and wise care. I have great memories of being called down to the front with the children to listen to a Bible story. I can still see Naaman dipping himself seven times in the River Jordan to be cleansed from leprosy - he always brought those stories to life!! Your Mom taught me the meaning of joy in her Sunday School class at age 5. She said Jesus, Others, Yourself -- in that order, and to this day I remember it.

I am so glad they are with our Lord today, but I know your loss is great for now. Please accept my sincere sympathy for the pain of the loss of their physical presence, though I know you all have immense joy in knowing not only where they are and Who they are with, but in the legacy they left behind by God's Grace. Praise be to God!
