Peggy Gainey Crooms died Feb. 23, 2011 of the ravages of Alzheimer's disease.

She was born May 28, 1935 in Largo, Fla. to Clyde and Evelyn Gainey. She became a Registered Nurse after training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and the Florida State Mental Hospital in Chattahoochee where she met and married her husband, Shelley Crooms. They started their family through moves from Chattahoochee to Pensacola to Lynn Haven, Fla. She raised her children to be independent people, and worked to make sure all of us received the education we needed to begin our careers. She was one of the best Nurses ever! When she worked in a nursing home she was the person called when it was hard to start an IV on a patient. She worked at the Florida State Mental Hospital during the late 1950's. She was a true patient advocate when she worked as an Operating Room Nurse at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. She eventually retired from the Mobile Chapter of the American Red Cross.

In addition to Shelley, she is survived by four children: Vicki Crooms of Mobile, Ala., Kitty Wunder (Ron) of Sewickley, Penn., Sandy Crooms of Columbus, Ohio and Michael Crooms of Lynn Haven, Fla.; as well as one granddaughter, Alora Crooms of Little Rock, Arkansas. She is also survived by her siblings, brothers Jack, Donald and Richard Gainey of Pensacola and one sister, Wanda DeCrow of Orlando.

Her family wishes to thank the staff at Emerald Shores Health and Rehabilitation Center for the care they showed our mother during her slow withdrawal from the world. Because of Alzheimer's disease our mother lost the memory of her life. Now she is at peace.
