Nicholas Chaknis, 89, of Lynn Haven, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2011, at a local nursing facility.

He was born in New York City, and had lived in Bay County since 1975, moving here from New Jersey. Mr. Chaknis served his country as a paratrooper in the US Army during WWII. He retired as a security guard at the Lansing-Smith power plant, and was a parishioner at St. Dominic Catholic Church. Mr. Chaknis was a wonderful grandfather, and enjoyed reading and keeping up with current events.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Rose Chaknis; his children, Paul Chaknis, Maria McKinney and husband Rick, Anthony Chaknis and wife Pat, and Amy Hoyt and husband Robert; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will begin at 12:30 PM Saturday, November 5, 2011, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Craig Brannon officiating. Interment with military honors by the US Army will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM, with a Rosary Service at 7:00 PM. Mr. Chaknis' sons and grandsons will serve as his pallbearers.
