Jackie R. Church, 74, of Panama City Beach, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at a local hospice.
Jackie was born in Roda, VA and was raised in Pound, VA – the Coal Country. He worked in the coal mine when he was 6 or 7. Later, he helped his uncles transport moonshine. At age 17, he joined the Army and served in Korea, did two tours in Vietnam, and traveled to many other places. After 21 years of service, he retired from the Army and moved to Louisville, KY. Throughout his career, he held jobs ranging from lumberjacking to painting cars. His hobbies were fishing and camping with his kids and watching Westerns on TV. He also loved his pets, and had three dogs, goats and cats.
Jackie is preceded in death by his parents, George and Nannie Church; a son, Chester Church; three brothers, Hicklin Church, Junior Church and Albert Church; and one sister, Helen Church Horne.
He is survived by his wife of 12 ½ years, Kay Kelley Church; two daughters, Theresa Jenkins (Randy) and Anna Church (Tony); two sons, Robert Church (Tracy) and Dewey Church; two step-daughters, Lori Lee Kiker and Amy Lee White (Stephen); a step-son, Timothy D. Lee (Wendy); 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will take place Friday, September 13, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Kent Forest Lawn Chapel. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, September 12 from 6-8 p.m.
