DANVILLE — Stanley A. Gill, 82. of Valley Township, Danville, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Maria Hall, Danville.
Born May 2, 1931, in Kulpmont, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Olshefski) Gill.
Stanley attended and was a 1949 graduate of Kulpmont High School. While in high school, he played football, was a boxer and participated in the senior class play. After high school, he attended Penn State University and Bucknell University for course work in statistical analysis.
On May 18, 1963, Stan married the former Darla Shiposh. They celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.
In the 1950s, Stan was first employed at the Harrisburg TRW plant where he was the youngest foreman at the time to hold the position. He later transferred to the Danville TRW plant and worked a total of 41 years in a variety of positions until retiring in 1991 as a quality control engineer.
In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing, pitching horseshoes, football, playing cards and traveling. Later in life, his favorite pastimes were gardening and playing golf. He often told friends that the definition of golf was "the art of hitting an insignificant pellet to an obscure hole with a totally inaccurate weapon."
He made freshly grated horseradish sauce and gave it to his friends and neighbors during the holidays. He also loved making wine.
He resided in Valley Township for the past 50 years where he was a Valley Township supervisor for 21 years, serving as chairman for several terms. He also served as a Republican committeeman for a number of years and was a member of the Montour County Planning Commission.
Stan held the fourth degree in the Knights of Columbus and also served as grand knight.
Stan was a lifelong Elks member and a trustee of the Danville Elks board. He was a Kiwanis member, past president and treasurer of the TRW Toastmaster Club and a member of the Susquehanna Valley Management Club. He was also involved in many other civic activities.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Danville for more than 50 years.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by two children, Eric D. Gill and wife Dawn A. Koons Gill, of Danville, and Debora Gill DeSimone, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; six grandchildren, TJ Styer, Brandyn Gill, Eric Gill, Vanessa Gill, Dylan DeSimone and Mason DeSimone; a great-grandchild, Ayden Styer, and several nieces and nephews.

I have many fond childhood memories of Uncle Shine during holiday family gatherings and will always remember his outgoing personality and warm smile. My thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Darla and Eric and Debbie.
