SHAMOKIN — John P. McGinn, 90, of 315 N. Vine St., passed away at his residence Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014. He lived there for 60 years. He was in ill health the past 10 years.
He was born in Shamokin, Sept. 13, 1923, a son of the late John Patrick McGinn and Elizabeth (Grayson) McGinn.
He was a lifelong resident of Shamokin.
On Oct. 28, 1946, in St. Stephen Church, Coal Township, he married the former Victoria Clara Biedrzycki, who preceded him in death.
John attended Garfield and St. Joseph's schools in Coal Township.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and entered active duty Dec. 27, 1941, from New Cumberland. During his enlistment, he served in the British Isles, France and Germany with the U.S. Army 8th Air Force and also with the 3rd Army, 28th Signal Heavy Construction Battalion. He received the American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He received an honorable discharge Dec. 5, 1945, from the Separation Center, Indiantown Gap Military Reservation.
He was employed as a business agent for Painters Local 41, a union painter/contractor and a coal miner.
He was a member of Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2318, Loyal Order of Moose 1149 and various other social clubs.
Surviving are his companion, Frances Tyson; three daughters, Joanne McGinn, of Elysburg, Christine Summers and her husband, Richard, of Mechanicsburg, and Mary Ann Shafer and her husband, David, of Shamokin; a son, Leonard McGinn, of Shamokin; four grandsons, Aaron Patrick Shafer, of Shamokin, Matthew Thomas Shafer and his wife, Jacqueline, of Yardley, Andy Summers and his wife, Shannon, of Harrisburg, and Jason McGinn and his wife, Bernadette, of Shamokin; a granddaughter, Robin E. Summers, of Philadelphia; a great-grandson, Jaccob McGinn, of Minersville; two great-granddaughters, Telaysia Shafer, of Shamokin, and Ivy Pearl Shafer, of Yardley, and several sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews and cousins.

McGINN — John P. McGinn, 90, of 315 N. Vine St., Shamokin. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin, with a friar of Mother Cabrini Church officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.
