Arnold William Lutz

ELYSBURG — ET-1(SS/SW) Arnold William Lutz, U.S. Navy (Ret.), passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, after losing a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on March 11, 1956, he was a son of Arnold L. Lutz and Laura Roberts.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Waltz-Lutz; two sisters, Bonnie Whitebread and Helen James, and his mother, Laura I. Roberts.

He grew up in Conyngham and graduated from West Hazleton High School in 1974. He attended Penn State University in 1974 and joined the U.S. Navy in May 1976.

During his time in the U.S. Navy, he earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science. He advanced to electronics technician first class petty officer, and qualified in submarine warfare and surface warfare. He primarily served on board ballistic missile submarines, known as "boomers," and accepted an early retirement Nov. 1, 1994.

Arnold worked at Walmart for seven years before joining the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections at SCI-Mahanoy as a correctional officer.

He enjoyed fishing, camping in his "5th wheel" and "playing" with numbers.

He and his wife became born again Feb. 19, 2012, and he spent a good amount of time trying to learn from and about the Bible. Carol and Arnold were able to do a full submersion baptism Aug. 12, 2012, before he was taken "home."

LUTZ — Arnold W. Lutz, of Elysburg. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday in the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury. Burial will be private. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, monetary charitable donations are asked to be sent to Bethel Union Chapel, 3449 Upper Road, Shamokin 17872, or to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250 in honor of Arnold W. Lutz. These were two of his favorite places to donate: one for a relationship with God and one for the unfortunate military members returning after doing their duty to help keep their nation free.
