Clara D. Ruths

MOUNT CARMEL — Clara D. Ruths, 87, of 26 S. Poplar St., died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at ManorCare Health Services-Sunbury.

Born at her homestead at 424 W. Cherry St., Mount Carmel, Feb. 23, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (Dziczkowski) Muraczewski.

Clara was a lifelong resident of Mount Carmel and was employed at the Victoria Theatre on the corner of Third and Pear streets in Mount Carmel. She then worked as a secretary at the Pennsylvania State Capitol. She worked as a legal secretary for the late Attorney Poklemba, of Mount Carmel, the late Attorney Strouss, also of Mount Carmel, and the late Attorney Rovito, of Shamokin. She was very precise with her typing.

On Sept. 24, 1947, in St. Gabriella Church, Norwood, she married Lewis "Dutch" Ruths, who preceded her in death Aug. 27, 1991.

Clara attended Our Mother of Consolation Parochial School and then attended Mount Carmel High School, where she graduated in 1943.

She was a former member of our Mother of Consolation Church and a member of the Divine Redeemer Church. She was a past member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary. She especially enjoyed going out to dinner with her granddaughter, August, and loved playing the piano and organ, which she was self-taught.

Survivors include two daughters, Donna P. Gurba, of Elysburg, widow of Paul, who died May 2, 1992, and Sandra L. (Lupatsky) Madison and her husband, Gary W., of Mount Carmel; six grandchildren, Paul Gurba Jr., August Marie, Michael Lupatsky Jr., twins Dennis and Constance Lupatsky and Linda M. Lupatsky; three great-grandchildren, Danielle Alexsandra, Ronald John and Paul Thomas III; a sister, Theresa "Tessie" Eccher and her husband, Aldo, of Stony Point, N.Y.; as well as nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Petty Officer Second Class Daniel Lupatsky, who lost his life Oct. 30, 1990, in an explosion aboard the Iwo Jima aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Navy officer Stanley Muraczewski and Dr. Joseph Muraczewski, both formerly of Mount Carmel.

RUTHS — Clara D. Ruths, 87, of 26 S. Poplar St., Mount Carmel. Prayer services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at C.J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., Mount Carmel, with the Rev. Martin O. Moran III officiating. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap. Viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home, C.J. Lucas IV, supervisor.
