SHAMOKIN — Longtime Shamokin resident Elba May "Ellie" Conklin, 81, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Wesley Village, Pittston.
Born in Lake Placid, N.Y., March 18, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Ruth and Merritt McCasland.
Ellie graduated in 1950 from Draper High in Schenectady, N.Y., and married Robert Conklin in 1951.
Robert was employed as a manager with JJ Newberry's and was promoted and transferred to other stores. Ellie found herself constantly changing jobs and acquiring new skills. Later, she was able to put her varied employment experience to use as an employment counselor. She worked for the unemployment office for more than 21 years.
She was always willing to help anyone resolve unemployment issues and was very proud of each person that she helped find work.
Intelligent, fair-minded and a great listener, Ellie was not only dedicated to her work but also to her family.

Conklin; her six grandchildren, Laura Newcombe, Lisa Rhinehart, Allison Puchyr, Michael Puchyr, Nicole Rivera and Leah Conklin; her two great-grandchildren, Kiersten and Daniel Rhinehart, and her sister, Bettye Liliathaw.
