SHAMOKIN — Elizabeth H. (Kandra) Horan, 82, formerly of 16 N. Eighth St., passed away Saturday morning, May 25, 2013, at Mountain View: A Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Coal Township. She had been ill for the past five years.
She was born March 31, 1931, in Shamokin, a daughter of the late John and Martha (Yonas) Kandra.
She was a 1948 graduate of Shamokin High School, and also attended nursing school in Philadelphia.
On Oct. 17, 1953, in St. Joseph's Church, Ashland, she married Francis T. Horan, who preceded her in death March 26, 2003.
For 15 years, she was employed as a nurse aide at Mountain View Manor, Coal Township. Later, she was employed in the Northumberland County Human Service Department, Sunbury, until her retirement in 1992.
She was a member of Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church, Shamokin, and the Shamokin/Coal Township Senior Action Center.
Elizabeth was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She especially enjoyed spending time with her husband, sons and granddaughter at their family cottage at Roaring Creek. She also looked forward to casino trips with her family and her good friend, Adrainne Fanella.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Laurene Horan, of Coal Township, and Thomas Horan, of Shamokin; a granddaughter, Susan Roman Cruz and her husband, Brandon, of East Norriton; two sisters, Rita Ferentz, of Barrington, N.J., and Charlotte Laskoskie, of Sunbury; a brother, Richard Kandra and his wife, Joann, of Selinsgrove; a brother-in-law, Max Switaj, of Shamokin, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Switaj.
HORAN — Elizabeth H. (Kandra) Horan, 82, formerly of 16 N. Eighth St., Shamokin. Divine Liturgy will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church, Shamokin, with the Rev. Ruslan Romanyuk as celebrant. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap. Viewing will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Stephen A. Chowka Funeral Home, 114 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin.
