Elizabeth Margaret "Betty" Lukonis

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Elizabeth Margaret "Betty" Lukonis, 96, of 424 Jersey St., Buffalo, N.Y., formerly of 1209 W. Spruce St., Coal Township, passed away Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Niagara Lutheran Home.

Born in Shamokin, Dec. 16, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Cecilia (Bonvicin) and George Schuck.

On May 12, 1945, in St. Joseph Church, Coal Township, she married Joseph Anthony "Joe" Lukonis, who preceded her in death on June 9, 1991.

Betty's family attended St. Edward Church until 1926 when the family moved to 1313 W. Spruce St. and joined St. Joseph Parish.

She attended St. Joseph Elementary School and graduated from Coal Township High School in 1934.

After graduation, Betty worked at Shroyer's Dress Company and Arrow Shirt Factory. She worked in the cafeteria at Our Lady of Lourdes High School and later as a clerk at Tobias' in retail until she retired.

During her later years, Betty volunteered for "Green Thumb" at Shamokin High School.

Betty sang on a radio show sponsored by Parenzan's Music Store, and she also recorded a record at that time. She sang in several operettas and belonged to the Choraliers. Betty was a member of the choir at St. Joseph Church for 50 years, serving several years as director. She sang for numerous weddings and funerals for more than 60 years.

Betty traveled to Germany, Hawaii and Rome. She also went on a cross-country road trip with her sister, Margaret, and niece, Barbara. During her 80th year, Betty journeyed to California with her sister, Alice. While there, she realized a longtime dream of a reunion with her friend, Marge, after 40 years.

She was the beloved mother of Rose Theresa (Lukonis) Murawski, of Raleigh, N.C.; loving grandmother of Gean and Darlene Grainger and Melissa Grainger and her husband, Adam Walters; cherished great-grandmother of Anna Rose Grainger; a sister of Alice Broscius, of Philadelphia, and aunt of numerous devoted nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by sisters, Carolyn, Margaret and Cecilia (Sister Mary Boniface, R.S.M.); and brothers, Neil, Austin, Albert, George and John.


LUKONIS — Elizabeth Margaret "Betty" Lukonis, 96, of 424 Jersey St., Buffalo, N.Y., formerly of 1209 W. Spruce St., Coal Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Hope Church, First and Chestnut streets, with Father Adrian Gallagher officiating. Friends are invited to call at the visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Christian Wake Service by the Rev. Mr. Robert P. Mack at 6 p.m., and also from 8 to 9:20 a.m. Saturday at James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township. Interment will follow Mass at All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap. As an expression of sympathy, the family requests memorial contributions be made to your local hospice program.
