Bishop Gerald E. Miller, 84, of Mechanicsburg, died peacefully surrounded by his family Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Country Meadows, Mechanicsburg.
Born December 14, 1927 in West Sand Lake, NY, he was a son of the late Edmund and Cora Hidley Miller. On August 21, 1954, in Salem Lutheran and Reformed Church, Klingerstown, he married the former Jean Rothermel.
He was a graduate of Hartwick College, Onconta, NY, and later received his Master of Divinity Degree from Philadelphia Seminary. He received his Honorary Doctorate in 1988 from Susquehanna University.
In the summer of 1953 he served the Line Mountain Lutheran Parish as a student intern. Gerald served as pastor to four Lutheran churches, including the former Zion Lutheran Church at Lykens. He later became the assistant to the Bishop in the Central Pennsylvania Synod and in 1987 he was elected Bishop of Allegheny Synod.
He loved baseball and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He also enjoyed traveling, music, fishing, and most of all his family.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 58 years, Jean Rothermel Miller of Mechanicsburg, are two sons, David Miller and his wife, Juane of Mechanicsburg and Geoffrey Miller and his wife, Cynthia of Highland, NY; two daughters, Deborah Knuth and her husband, Paul, of Camp Hill, and Diane Houghton of Mechanicsburg; twelve grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Raymond Miller; and one sister, Evelyn Wilson.
A service of celebration will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 44 West Main St., Shiremanstown, with Pastor Michael L. Seifried officiating.
