LOCUSTDALE — Glenn R. Kessler, 85, of Locustdale, passed away Monday afternoon, April 28, 2014, at his residence.
Born June 17, 1928, in Locustdale, he was a son of the late Edward and Gertrude Schwemlein Kessler.
He was a graduate of the former Butler Township High School, Fountain Springs, Class of 1946.
Glenn served in the U.S. Army in Berlin, Germany.
He was employed as a coal miner for local bootleg coal holes and later at the Potts Colliery, Locustdale, until its closing. After the closing of the colliery, he worked as a custodian at the former W.C. Estler School in Ashland where he was known as "Smokey." He continued in the North Schuylkill School District, serving as scorekeeper for the basketball and wrestling teams and as clock operator for North Schuylkill's football team until his retirement.
A lover of baseball, Glenn was affiliated with baseball teams in Locustdale. He was a great New York Yankees fan.
He was a member of Grace Evangelical Independent Church, Locustdale, where he started in the cradle roll department in 1930 and continued his involvement with the church as an official board member and officer for many years.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Theresa "Dot" Kessler, of Locustdale; a son, John Kessler and his wife, Debbie, of Ashland; a daughter, Dottie Kessler, of Manville, N.J. grandchildren, Christine and Douglas Bradley and Amber and Angela Kessler; a sister in-law, Betty Taylor, of Orwigsburg, and nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were brothers, George, Bob, Earl, and Edward Jr. Kessler and two sisters, Grace Kessler and Ruth Jones.
KESSLER — Glenn Kessler, 84, of Locustdale. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1, in the Grace Evangelical Independent Church, Main St., Locustdale. Officiating will be Rev. Rose M. Marquardt. Interment with military honors will follow in the Brock Cemetery, Ashland. A viewing will be held in the church, 9 a.m. until service.
