Hazel Irene Rooney

KULPMONT — Hazel Irene Rooney, 73, a guest at Mountain View: A Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Coal Township, and a resident of 1214 Scott St., passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, from injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013.

She was born in Donnybrook, N.D., June 14, 1939, a daughter of the late Cecil R. and Grace D. (Miller) Johnson.

Hazel worked as a seamstress in Kulpmont and Elysburg garment factories.

On July 15, 1990, in Lake Tahoe, Nev., she married Henry Francis Rooney, who survives.

Hazel was of the Protestant faith — a Baptist her whole life.

She was a member of West End Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Kulpmont.

Hazel loved spending time with her large family and her many friends. Dancing to country and western music with her dear husband, Henry, brought her great joy. They were also known to waltz on occasion.

She enjoyed camping at the Baker's Dozen Camping Club, Barbours, and also baking. She was an extensive traveler who greatly valued what she experienced on the many trips she took.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons, Howard Splitt Sr. and his wife, Lorraine, of Mount Carmel, and Donald Splitt and his wife, Sheila, of Merced, Calif.; a daughter, Theresa Stephenson, of Missouri; five stepchildren, Donna Marie Cuiksa, of Wheeling, W.Va., Jacqueline Rooney, of Mount Carmel, Roseanne Barr and her husband, Randy, of Hegins, Susanne Green and her husband, David, of Beury's Grove, and William Rooney and his wife, Holly, of Akron, Ohio; 24 grandchildren including her grandson, Robert W. Splitt, whom she raised from an early age; 32 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a great-great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews, and her faithful buddy, "Zoey," a Siberian husky.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Steven Splitt and Robert Splitt.
