MOUNT CARMEL — Henry W. Szymanski, 88, of Mount Carmel, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital, Coal Township.
He was born at home in Mount Carmel, Aug. 2, 1924, a son of the late Ladislaus and Magdalena (Sitko) Szymanski.
Henry was a 1943 graduate of Mount Carmel High School.
He served with the U.S. Army
during World War II
, and owned and operated Hank's Garage, a permanent fixture in Mount Carmel for 60 years.
On Nov. 23, 1946, in Church of Our Lady, Mount Carmel, he married the late Mildred D. (Gildea) Szymanski, who preceded him in death Feb. 11, 2011.
Henry loved crabbing, fishing, hunting, Mount Carmel Red Tornado football, spending time with his family, and making kielbasas and soupies.
Henry was devoted to community service. He served on the Mount Carmel Centennial Planning Committee, was the founding officer and past president of the Kiwanis Club in Mount Carmel and started the Kiwanis Key Club at Mount Carmel Area High School. He was proud to be the head of the Mount Carmel Area football "chain crew" for the Red Tornadoes for more than 25 years. He rarely missed a football game in more than 60 years, even traveling to away games until the past few years when he was unable to do so.
Henry is survived by his five children, Elaine Siket and her husband, Andrew J. Jr., of Florida, Michael P. Szymanski, Henry M. Szymanski and his wife, Louise, and Virginia M. Szymanski, all of Mount Carmel, and Paul H. Szymanski and his wife, Linda, of Doylestown; eight grandchildren, Melissa Ouari, Jon Szymanski, Mallory Gricoskie and her husband, Kyle, Meredith Szymanski, Michael Szymanski Jr., Bryan Szymanski, Blake Szymanski and P.J. Szymanski; a great-grandson, Noah Ouari, and two sisters, Eleanor Sosnoski, of Mount Carmel, and Harriet O'Brien, of State College.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Phyllis Fracalossi, Regina Szymanski, Rita M. Bernatowicz and Victoria Tracey, and five brothers, Edward Szymanski, Michael Szymanski, Walter Szymanski, Joseph Szymanski and John Szymanski.
SZYMANSKI — Henry W. Szymanski, 88, of Mount Carmel. Relatives, friends and neighbors are invited to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Divine Redeemer Church, 300 West Ave., Mount Carmel, with the Rev. John A. Szada Jr. as celebrant. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap, with full military honors provided by the Mount Carmel Area Joint Veteran
