Herman L. Wiest, 81, of Stevens, died Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Hospice & Community Care, Lancaster, after an extended battle with Leukemia.
Born in Hegins, he was a son of the late Allen and Annie Schmeltz Wiest and was the husband of Dorothy Lohr Wiest, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
He served in the Army
from 1954 to 1956. During his working years, he spent 17 years as a Merchant Marine for Atlantic Richfield Co. He later worked on shore for ARCO and Sunoco in the oil refining industry before retiring in 1996.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Elwood Wiest; and a sister, Arlene Freeman.
In addition to his wife, Herman is survived by three sons, Richard, husband of Karen Wiest, Lancaster, Kerry, husband of Kim Wiest, Ephrata, and Scott, husband of Sharon Wiest, St. Mary's; 14 grandchildren, Kelley Hadlow, Danielle Artus, Andrea Weidman, Derrick Wiest, Alex Wiest, Samuel Wiest, Courtney Thacker, Scott Wiest Jr., Emily Wiest, Megan Wiest, Ben Wiest, Madison Wiest, Lydia Wiest and Morgan Wiest; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Wiest, Tar City, and Eugene Wiest, Gratz; two sisters, Shirley, wife of Paul Schrope, Harrisburg, and Connie Bagley, Salem, Ore.
Services were held Wednesday, March 13 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, Pa. with the Rev. Scott Wiest Sr. officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors.
