LAS VEGAS, Nev. — John Elwood Evans, 75, of Las Vegas, Nev., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013.
He was born in Shamokin, Jan. 22, 1938, a son of the late Harold and Edith Evans.
He joined the U.S. Navy
and served proudly for 20 years before retiring and working another 20 years as a school teacher
. He taught fourth and fifth grades at Jim Thorpe Elementary School in the Poconos.
On Jan. 25, 1958, in Paxinos, he married Geraldine Yordy, who survives.
John was a great coach of baseball, football and wrestling. He was also very athletic and enjoyed playing all sports, especially baseball and softball. He also enjoyed playing poker.
Before being stricken ill, he and his wife traveled across the country in his RV meeting friends and family.
In addition to his wife, Geraldine, he is survived by a daughter, Michelle Lee and her husband, Bill, of Las Vegas; two grandchildren, Jaime Lehman and her husband, Shaun, and Bryce Lee; a great-grandson, Nate Lehman; a sister, Grace Ann Phillips and her husband, Capt. Joe; a brother, Ralph Evans and his wife, Nancy; four nephews, Joe Phillips and his wife, Lisa, and Scott Phillips, and Mark Evans and his wife, Dawn, and Jonathan Evans and his wife, Kristin, and a brother-in-law, Jack Yordy.
