BELLEFONTE — John Joseph "J.J." Moore, 79, of Bellefonte, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, in Centre Crest Nursing Home.
His wife, Shirley Moore, died in 2009.
Born in Danville at Geisinger Hospital, Feb. 6, 1934, he was a son of the late John A. and Marion E. (Middlesworth) Moore.
He was a 1951 graduate of Shamokin High School where he was a three-year starter on the Shamokin wrestling team coached by National Wrestling Hall of Fame Coach Mal Paul. He was a 1949 district and wrestling champion and a state qualifier.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy
during the Korean War
. He volunteered for the Naval Submarine Service and from 1951 to 1955, he served on two post-World War II
submarines, USS Sea Owl (SS405) and USS Grouper (SSK214), until his separation into inactive reserves in 1959.
In 1958, J.J. became a member of the Pottstown Police Department as a foot beat patrolman. He married Shirley Ann "Irish" Reidenouer (Allen), the love of his life, in 1966. In 1968, he was promoted to detective sergeant and placed in charge of the detective division. In 1976, he was promoted to captain, in charge of the uniform patrol division. He retired in 1984, after 25 years of police service. During this time he received numerous awards and citations from the FBI and Pottstown Police. Throughout his police career, he attended Penn State University
where he received a degree in police administration and community service in 1977 from PSU-Berks.
In 1985, he was hired as a park ranger for Montgomery County and was stationed at the Green Lane Reservoir and the Norristown Farm Park until his retirement in 2000.
After retirement, he and Shirley moved to State College where they attended all Penn State football games, many baseball games and wrestling matches. Both were very avid sports fans. J.J. also enjoyed cooking and golf as a sideline.
He was a member of the Pottstown Police Officers Association, USS National Naval Submarine Association, Berks County Chapter Submarine Service, Reading, Holland Club Member, Penn State Alumni Association, Bellefonte Elks, American Legion Post 245 State College, VFW State College Post 321 and USS Sea Owl Association.
He is survived by his daughter, Jill Allen Burd (Reidenouer), wife of Jere; granddaughters, Taryn DeVon, wife of Jim Hummel, Tonya Dee McGahey, Karen Fishman; and five great-grandchildren, Maegan, Makenna, James, Shaun and Ryan, and numerous cousins, including John Middlesworth, of State College, and Billie Goldstein, of Phoenixville.
MOORE — John Joseph "J.J." Moore, 79, of Bellefonte. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Memorial Park Chapel, 701 Farmington Ave., Pottstown. Entombment will be in the adjoining Mausoleum. Viewings will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kuhn-Stitzel Funeral Homes Inc., 423 Main St., Oley, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel.
