COAL TOWNSHIP — Mary E. Bird, 93, of 2050 Trevorton Road, Coal Township, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family at 11:56 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Mountain View: A Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she was a resident since August.
Born May 31, 1920, in Belfast, Ireland, she was a daughter of the late Elizabeth (McNulty) and Thomas P. Patton. She was an only child, and immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1923. They settled in Newark, N.J. She moved to Shamokin with her husband in 1942. She also resided for 20 years at Sheridan Courts, Coal Township.
On Sept. 25, 1940, at Havre de Grace, Md., she married Richard Joseph Bird, who preceded her in death Nov. 27, 1989.
She was a full time homemaker and loved raising her children.
She was a parishioner of Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin, and a former parishioner of Our Lady of Hope Church, Coal Township.
Mary enjoyed camping, watching Jeopardy! and doing crossword puzzles. She was also an avid reader.
She was survived by three daughters, Elizabeth "Becky" Seroski, and her husband, Fred, of Shamokin, Kathryn Stadnicki, and her husband, Anthony, of Shamokin, and Brenda Bird, and her companion Michael Todisco, of Shamokin; four sons, Thomas Bird, of Shamokin; Michael Bird and his wife, Christine, of Shamokin, Raymond Bird, of Williamsport, and Richard Bird, of Danville; 16 grandchildren, Debra and Joseph Case, Susan and James Bressi, Darlene and Jarrod Scandle, Ryan Seroski, Patricia Stadnicki and her companion, Sean Mikulak, Matthew Bird, Branden Smeltzer and his companion, Amy Bixler, all of Shamokin, Rachael Seroski, of Portland, Ore., Beth and Mark Weikel, of Summerville, N.C., Janine and Michael Wasilewski, of Elberon, Va., Erica Smeltzer and her companion, Andrew Haas, of Odenton, Md, and Aaron, Torri, Christine, Brandon and Angela Bird, all of Omaha, Neb., and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, and Richard, her loving husband of nearly 50 years, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Joseph, in September 2013.
BIRD — Mary E. Bird, 93, of 2050 Trevorton Road, Coal Township. A religious funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township, with a Mother Cabrini Parish friar officiating. Interment of her cremains will follow the service at All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg. Family members and friends will be received from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday in the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library, 201 E. Independence St., Shamokin 17872, or to the Mother Cabrini Church Memorial Fund, 214 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin 17872.
