KULPMONT — George R. Watkins, 77, of 1109 Poplar St., died suddenly Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at home.

He was born in Kulpmont, May 9, 1935, a son of the late Frederick "Cheesy" and Mildred (Kashnoski) Watkins. He was a lifelong resident of Kulpmont and worked many years in local coal mines and was also employed by Arc Wire in Strong.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1957, and was stationed in Germany as a tank mechanic.

On June 4, 1960, in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Marion Heights, he married the former Esther Lauda, who survives.

He was educated in Wilson School, Kulpmont, and was of the Protestant faith.

George was a very loving, laid-back person with a witty sense of humor. He loved the outdoors and in his prime, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also loved spending time with his family and his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, George K. Watkins and his wife, Jill, of Bloomsburg, Lisa Bowers, of Kulpmont, Fred Watkins and his wife, Betty, of Bear Gap, Sharon Gross and her husband, Rich, 0f Wake Forest, N.C., and Amanda Rusesky and her husband, Stan, of Marion Heights; nine grandchildren, Joanna, Erin and Barry Bowers, Jacob Beaver, Brian and Jessica Watkins, Allie and Aiden Gross, and Hannah Rusesky; three sisters, Marion Bridy and Louise Stello, both of Kulpmont, and Margie Swank, of Irish Valley. He was expecting his first great-grandchild in July. He also is survived by his beloved dog and companion, Buttons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Lacross and Claire Bronkoski.
