Gerald P. Stauffenberg, 74, of Tower City died Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Holy Spirit Hospital.

Born in Mahanoy City, September 14, 1938, he was a son of the late John H. and Helen Pietruszewski Stauffenberg.
Gerald was a graduate of Mahanoy Twp. High School and East Stroudsburg University with a degree in education.
He began his teaching career in 1961 at Porter Township High School where he taught Health and Physical Education. After the district jointure he began his distinguished teaching career at Williams Valley High School for 28 years, retiring in 1992. His coaching career began in 1961 where he was the head coach of the football team; in 1964 he became head coach of the basketball team and in 1965 he started the wrestling program at Williams Valley. Coach Stauffenberg recorded 99 career wins as the Vikings head football coach and 92 career wins as an assistant coach. He served 18 years as head coach and 14 years as an assistant, his last being the 2011-2012 school year. He was inducted into the Schuylkill County Football Coaches' Association Hall of Fame and the Jerry Wolman Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. In honor of Coach Stauffenberg's dedication to the school district the Williams Valley Viking Stadium has been renamed "Stauffenberg Field" at Viking Stadium.
He was member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Tower City where he had served on the consistory. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking.
In addition to his parents he was pre-deceased by his wife, Marliss K. Purnell Stauffenberg, May 24, 1998.
Surviving are his five children, Jody L. Bast and her husband Dr. Carl Bronitsky, Arizona; Barry L. Stauffenberg and his fiancé Robin Holden, Wiconisco; Bruce P. Stauffenberg and his wife Karen Jones, Halifax; Penni K. Doe and her husband William, Tower City and Richard J. Stauffenberg and his wife Amy, Tower City; two brothers, Robert Stauffenberg, North Carolina and Richard Stauffenberg, Bethlehem; nine grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 5, from the Trinity United Church of Christ with Rev. Edward Gobrecht. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, Orwin.
