KULPMONT — John J. "Taxi" Hutnick, 52, of 1071 Pine St., went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014.

He was born April 8, 1961, at Ashland State Hospital, a son of the late Charles "Taxi" and Jean (McDonald) Hutnick.

He was a 1980 graduate of North Schuykill High School. He received an associate degree in criminal justice from Norfolk Community College.

He was married June 25, 1983, at Bethany Bible Fellowship Church, Wilburton, to Kathleen (Kane) Hutnick who survives.

John served in the U.S. Navy for 18 1/2 years, retiring at the rank of master at arms (E-6). He took great pride in serving his country with honor. He was a Persian Gulf War Veteran. During his military career, he was nominated for "Sailor of Year — East Coast." He considered this nomination a great honor considering how many thousands of sailors are stationed on the east coast. He received the following medals and citations: Rifle Marksmanship Medal, Pistol Marksmanship Medal, Navy "E" Ribbon, twice, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, twice, Combat Action Ribbon, Flag Letter of Commendation, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and several other awards and citations. Following his naval career, John was employed at SCI Frackville as a corrections officer for 10 years.

John had a very strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He always put family first. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He looked forward to the birth of his second grandson, Gavin, who is going to be born in March. He loved attending and cheering for all of his family members at their sporting events and loved all sports. He was a former Mount Carmel Area girls basketball junior varsity coach. He loved to swim in his pool, play softball and listen to country music. He enjoyed broadcasting football games on 99.7 Clear Channel Radio with his good friends Rich Thiroway, Rich McPeak and Stan Hojnacki. John also loved his two pets, his dog, Haley, and cat, Tinkerbell.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; two daughters, Stacy Huber and her husband, David, and Lindsay Shutt and her husband, Jonathan, all of Kulpmont; a gandson and apple of John's eye, Jax Huber; three brothers, Charles Hutnick and his wife, Sherri, of Ashland, Paul Hutnick and Lenore, of Ashland, and Joseph Hutnick and his wife, Charity, of Dillsburg; a sister, Debbie Buck and her husband, Robert, of Florida; a stepbrother, Edward Edelstein, of Cressona, and nieces and nephews.


HUTNICK — John J. "Taxi" Hutnick, 52, of 1071 Pine St., Kulpmont. A religious service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Restoration Ministries Church, 525 W. Chestnut St., Shamokin, with the Rev. Paul Eby officiating. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Viewings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wddnesday and 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church Thursday. The Joseph J.
