SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT — Josephine R. Caffery, 96, of South Williamsport, formerly of Kulpmont, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the Tate House Hospice, Linthicum, Md.

She was born in Kulpmont, March 4, 1917, a daughter of the late Dominic and Laura (Colicchio) Benedetto.

Josephine was a member and communicant of the St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, South Williamsport. She also was a member of the altar and rosary society of the church and a lay reader of the congregation. She had taught CCD courses and was also a member of the bereavement committee.

She was a member of the Lycoming Tioga Deanery, the Diocesan Councils of Catholic Women, and a member of the National Council of Catholic Women.

Josephine was a graduate of the 1935 class of the Kulpmont High School. She had attended all of her class reunions except for the 2011 and 2012 reunions. She was a graduate of the 1940 class of what is now Bloomsburg University. She also studied Russian linguistics at Lycoming College.

Josephine was a long-term substitute for the South Williamsport Area School District and was a sixth grade teacher at the former Saint Boniface Elementary School. She taught ninth grade at the former Saint Mary's Junior High School in Williamsport. She also was a teacher at the former Bishop Newman High School where she was responsible for teaching French, Spanish, Latin, English and social studies. Josephine was also the former freshman, sophomore, junior and senior class sponsor.

She and her late husband, John Caffery, were married Sept. 16, 1946. Together they shared 60 years of marriage.

Josephine is survived by a daughter, Margaret M. Nicols and her husband, Robert B., of Linthicum, Md.; a son, James R. Caffery and his wife, Robin, of Mesa, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Melissa E. Gilbert and her husband, Nathan, of Haymarket, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Coleman Gilbert and Lyla Gilbert, of Haymarket.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Mike, Tony and Nick, and two sisters, Minnie and Teresa.


CAFFERY — Josephine R. Caffery, 96, of South Williamsport, formerly of Kulpmont. A funeral service and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, 812 W. Central Ave., South Williamsport, with the Msgr. Stephen D. McGough as celebrant. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Montoursville. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Charles M. Noll Funeral Home, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport. The family will provide floral tributes and kindly request that contributions in memory of Josephine be made, if so desired, to the St. John Newman Regional Academy, 901 Penn St., Williamsport 17701, or to Saint Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, 326 Washington Blvd., Williamsport 17701.
