SHAMOKIN — Lawrence J. Bartol, 90, of 815 E. Webster St., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born Oct. 25, 1922, he was a son of the late Leucadia (Juchniewicz) and Lawrence T. Bartol.

He was a 1950 graduate of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, with a degree in business administration.

Enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps on Oct. 30, 1941, in Philadelphia, he served as a corporal in World War II, participating in the American Theater from March 1941 to April 1941, the Asiatic Pacific Area 4 from April 1942 to June 1944, and April 1945 to October 1945. Cpl. Bartol also participated in action against the enemy at Guadalcanal from September 1942 to January 1943 and at Cape Gloucester from December 1943 to April 1944. He was a pistol marksman and was awarded the certificate of satisfactory service and received the Good Conduct Medal. He received an honorable discharge on Nov. 28, 1945, at Bainbridge, Md.

On July 2, 1952, in Wayne County, Mich., he married the former Ann Marie Grill, who survives him.

He was employed for a short time at Stevens Coal Company before becoming the owner and sole proprietor of Bartol's Market, a second generation, family-owned business which was originally started by his father, Lawrence T. Bartol.

He was a parishioner of Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin, and a lifelong active member and treasurer of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Shamokin.

He was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to Ann Marie, his loving wife of 60 years, Lawrence is survived by a son, James J. Bartol, husband of Ginger, of Pottsville; three daughters, Renee DiDomizio, wife of Frank, of Lansdale, Michelle M. Bartol, wife of Tom Bilich, of Huntingdon, and Simone Bartol McCaffrey, wife of Michael McCaffrey, of Princeville, Hawaii; five grandchildren, Alyson, Erik, Gabriella, Hunter and Simone; a great-grandchild, Jayden, and a sister, Roberta Coleman, wife of Bill, of Hilton Head, S.C.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Bartol Devic and six-month-old Louise Bartol.

BARTOL — Lawrence J. Bartol, 90, of 815 E. Webster St., Shamokin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Mother Cabrini Church, 200 N. Shamokin St. at Webster Street, Shamokin. Interment will follow the Mass at All Saints Cemetery, Elysburg. Friends are invited to call at the visitation from 8:30 to 9:20 a.m. Friday at James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street, Coal Township. As an expression of sympathy, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady Of Lourdes Regional School, 2001 Clinton Ave., Coal Township 17866.
