MOHNTON — Leonard John Marchinski, 87, of Mohnton, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, in Reading Hospital and Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family after a two-month illness.

Born Nov. 5, 1925, in Mount Carmel, he was the youngest of three children.

Leonard graduated from Mount Carmel Catholic High School in 1943. He attended Northwestern University, where he played football. An ardent student of aeronautical engineering, he graduated from University of Notre Dame in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science, and subsequently obtained his Master of Science from Drexel University. He also received his professional engineering degree.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

He married Rita Alonso, who survives.

Leonard began working for Piasecki Helicopters in 1950, working there while they transitioned to VERTOL division Boeing Aircraft. During this time, he was local chapter president of the American Helictopter Society and was a local pioneer in the application of Finite Element Analysis to advanced composite structural design technology.

Semi-retired in 1988, he began working for E.I. DuPont, where his extensive international and domestic travels led to more widespread incorporation of their Kevlar, Nomex and Hercules composites in the aircraft industry, and led to his related consulting work for the U.S. Army and Navy.

During Leonard's 60-year career, he directed Boeing's stress and structures team in their crowning achievement, the CH-47 Chinook helicopter. He was also proud of his work on the V-22 tiltrotor Osprey and stealth RH66 Commanche gunship.

He was passionate about education, giving back to the community and active in the church.

In addition to his devoted wife of 62 years, Rita, Leonard is survived by two children, Dr. Renee (Marchinski) Hartman and son-in-law, Dr. Ronald Hartman, of Leewood, Kan., and Dr. Leonard Marchinski and his fiancé, Jennifer Weller, of Mohnton. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Lindsay Marchinski, of Philadelphia, Alonso Lee Marchinski, of Plano, Texas, and Alexander Marchinski, currently studying at Penn State University.
