SHAMOKIN — Pasquale R. "Pay" Chiavaroli, 89, passed away early Thursday morning, Feb. 14, 2013, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after suffering a stroke Monday, Feb. 11, at his Sunbury Street estate.

He was born in the Fifth Ward of Shamokin, Jan. 18, 1924, a son of the late Christina (Evangelista) and Sabatino Chiavaroli. He was the second of eight children.

He attended the Shamokin public school system, where he excelled in football and wrestling. He made it all the way to the state wrestling finals.

Upon graduating from Shamokin High School in 1942, he came to the aid of his country by serving in the U.S. Air Force/Army from 1943 to 1949, and in the Army Reserves until 1951, reaching the rank of sergeant.

He attended Williamsport Technical Institute and Bucknell University, where he studied commercial and fine art. He was a great painter. (If you have any of his paintings, please contact the family.)

He married his best buddy, Annella Jones, June 4, 1955, in St. Edward Church, Shamokin, and made his kids attend church thereafter.

"Pay" and Annella lived in Williamsport and Philadelphia for a little while, but soon moved back to Shamokin.

He worked as an aviation mechanic for the government during and after World War II before retiring.

He never missed a day of work unless it was really important like taking a carload of elementary school kids to the state spelling bee or going to Saturday Night Live in New York City.

He once took part in the heroic rescue of Shamokin cheerleaders stranded at cheerleading camp during Hurricane Agnes.

He had a lifelong love for the game of golf and was a member of Indian Hills Golf and Tennis Club since the early 1960s when it was known as Shamokin Valley Country Club.

"Pay" and Annella "snow-birded" to New Smyrna, Fla., for 15 years, where they actually had Yuengling beer.

Survivors include seven siblings, Arthur, Anna, Amy, Joe, Jean, John and Michael; a daughter, Kris Mace and her children, Shannon Mace and Joy Doncheski; a son, Jim Chiavaroli and his daughter, Luci Konga.

His wife, Annella, passed away less than a year ago, and now, too, does he pass.

Because Annella would have said no, there will be no services.

To swipe a quote from his favorite singer, Ol' Blue Eyes himself, "The best is yet to come."
