MOUNT CARMEL — Philathea (McCollum Faust) Welker, 96, formerly of West Spruce Street, Shamokin, died at 10:25 a.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, at Mount Carmel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Shamokin, May 9, 1917, a daughter of the late William and Hettie (McCollum) Faust. She was raised by her grandparents Irvin and Mary Jane McCollum.

On Aug. 8, 1939, in Shamokin, she married Robert S. Welker, who passed away April 28, 2000.

A 1935 graduate of Shamokin High School, she and her husband were co-owners of Academy Sports Center, Mount Carmel.

Philathea was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Shamokin, where she had taught Sunday school. She also was a member of the YWCA board of directors and was a youth advisor for the group. She was given a life membership for the Shamokin Hospital Auxiliary for her volunteer service, and had served for 20 years as secretary of the Shamokin Area High School Alumni Association as class representative for the Class of 1935.

Surviving are a son, Robert W. Welker and his wife, Catherine, of Mount Carmel; a daughter, Louanne Walsh and her husband, Tim, of Shamokin; four grandchildren, Catherine Besser and her husband, Dave, Brian Walsh and his wife, Tessa, T.J. Walsh and his wife, Kate, and Nicholas Walsh and his wife, Jessica, and four great-grandchildren, David and Amy Besser and Barrett and Alison Walsh.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Welker, and a grandson, Robert J. "Tag" Welker.


WELKER — Philathea (McCollum Faust) Welker, 96, formerly of West Spruce Street, Shamokin. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Farrow Funeral Home, Sixth and Chestnut streets, Shamokin, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Peiffer officiating. Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until time of service at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Robert J. "Tag" Welker Scholarship Fund c/o Robert W. Welker, 39 N. Maple St., Mount Carmel 17851.
