HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — Robert J. Yeager, 67, a beloved father, passed away on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
He was born to the late Norman Yeager and Carolyn Dietz, of Shamokin, Pa. He was the youngest of five brothers, Donald, Norman, Barry and Dave, and two sisters, JoAnn and May.
Born in July 1947, he later became a decorated U.S. Army Ranger and served three tours in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne, 79th Airborne, and 5th Special Forces.
After serving in Vietnam, he settled in Weston, Pa., where he volunteered as a fireman with the Weston Fire Company, served as fire chief and worked with the Pennsylvania Department of Emergency Management.
Wherever he lived, he was beloved by friends and family who knew him for his gracious personality and trademark answer to "How are you?" — "Miserable, but thanks for asking."
A compassionate man, he loved to take care of animals. Many were familiar with the herds of wild deer that would gather daily around his front door waiting for dinner.
A doting grandfather called "Pap Pap," he could often be found playing with his grandchildren, even after major surgery.
Yeager is survived by his two sons, Robert Yeager and Robert Yeager Jr.; three daughters, Kim Houseknecht, Donna and Andrea; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
